How we unconference: Nurture is in our Nature

Nurture your mind with great thoughts. To believe in the heroic make heroes.

Benjamin Disraeli

Our unconference is now prepared and ready to roll. But how do we manage such an amorphous, ever-evolving event?  We watch and we respond. Seizing opportunity and harnessing unexpected contributions and embracing serendipitous gifts of a diverse and talented audience.

With Stream, the calibre of guests and the power of their interactions have real impact. There is a justified focus on encouraging relaxation and social activity; breaking down barriers, and fostering collaboration. People work better together in relaxed environments and the inspired attendees want to share experiences and talk shop as only they know. Here, talking shop is exciting, it’s new, ground-breaking and people want to talk about it.

The be-good crew are a key part of making Stream flow, not just from a technical point of view, but as part of the event. There is no hiding behind desks and clipboards. We get things going, and maintain the momentum. Our job is not simply to build and produce, but to generate the atmosphere and engender participation. We are ambassadors, facilitators, chefs, artists, performers and stage managers.

We believe that a true unconference has to be pretty low-tech. Why? Because we don’t want to hide behind smoke and mirrors. And we certainly don’t want participants glued to laptops or sitting in corners on conference calls. This is a space to unplug and engage, to listen, learn and make connections.

As each hour passes and the guests are increasingly energised and inspired by each other, more and more spontaneous and creative contributions to the agenda are welcomed and facilitated by the production team.

If you love something set it free… the rewards are beyond expectations.

Production is about more than design, logistics and engineering but also about the interaction between the crew, the host team and critically the participants. At a human level be-good has become an inseparable and integral part of the Stream community. They approach the project as collaborators professionally and socially. Their enthusiasm allows the creativity of others to emerge and be celebrated and that can only be achieved with a rare combination of invisible hard work delivered with a light touch and a genuine understanding that we measure success by the value created for our participants. be-good are good, not just for what they do but how they do it.

Rob Norman, Chief Digital Officer, GroupM

It’s amazing having you all involved – as people that are a lot more than ‘suppliers’… You are all part of the team, and it really feels like you care about the event being successful as much as we do.

Jonathan Lenson, WPP Global Head of Strategy & Corporate Development at ESP Properties

Brilliantly orchestrated. I was thrilled to have been a part of it

The (un)conference Culture, by Yasir Khokar, Connecterra

Yasir Khokhar from Connecterra neatly lays out the elements that create an unconference culture, which can also be carried over into organizations, in his blog on WPP Stream 2016. Like him, we believe the ethos of an unconference embodies the spirit of entrepreneurship and individualism that should be nurtured and promoted in all facets of work. Thank…

The ballet of WPP Stream. Robert Lang’s view of our unconference.

Our production of the WPP Stream 2016 unconference is nicely summarised in this Medium article by Robert Lang from SocialBakers. Thank you Robert. “Just imagine what goes on behind the scenes to make three days’ worth of around 10 sessions per hour look effortless. As a participant you have the impression that everything flows together so easily,…

WPP Stream Global 2016

Stream exceeded our expectations this year.  There were discussions on gender fluidity; predicting our dystopian future; the economic and social implications of AI; our relationship with food; how to raise genius kids; life and health hacks; problem solving hands on workshops; musical talent; creativity in the kitchen and so much more.

Why do we work? Your employees are your consumers and they value experiences.

Why do we work? Silly question? What I really mean is; why do we continue to work for someone, a commercial entity or an institution? In these user generated, self-selecting times we are no longer easy targets for sales, nor are we easily instructed or preached to from above, whatever the hierarchy of our work…

Disruption=Discussion. The WPP Stream Asia 2016 unconference.

We took our democratic disruption east last month for the WPP Stream Asia 2016 unconference. Kata Beach, in balmy Phuket, saw guests from across the APAC world of media, digital and tech, meet to debate and shape the digital future. With our own brand of controlled chaos we facilitated 3 days of deconstructed, relaxed networking and debate. Here’s a…
